Working out GST shouldn't slow you down. Whether you're quoting a job, reconciling an invoice, or filling out your GST return, our free NZ GST calculator does the hard work in seconds. New Zealand's Goods and Services Tax (GST) sits at a flat rate of 15%. Use this calculator to instantly add GST to a GST-exclusive price, or strip GST out of a GST-inclusive amount, no spreadsheets, no guesswork.
New Zealand’s GST rate is 15%. It applies to most goods and services sold in New Zealand and has been at this rate since 1 October 2010. GST is administered by Inland Revenue (IRD).
To add GST to a GST-exclusive price, multiply the amount by 1.15. For example, if a builder quotes $500 + GST, the GST-inclusive total is $500 × 1.15 = $575. Our calculator above does this instantly — just enter your amount and hit “Add GST.”
To remove GST from a GST-inclusive price, divide the total by 1.15. For example, a $575 GST-inclusive invoice contains $575 ÷ 1.15 = $500 excluding GST. The GST portion is $75. Use the “Remove GST” option in our calculator to get these figures in one step.
Any business or sole trader that earns (or expects to earn) more than $60,000 in a 12-month period must register for GST with IRD. You can also choose to register voluntarily if you earn under this threshold, which can be useful for claiming back GST on business expenses. Tradies, contractors, and subcontractors in the construction industry commonly register early for this reason.
Your GST filing frequency depends on your turnover and the option you choose when registering with IRD:
Returns and payments are due on the 28th of the month following the end of your taxable period (with some exceptions for the November period, which is due 15 January).
